Londinium

We talk a lot about how old and great the city of London is here on our website, and we owe it all to the mighty Romans of around AD 50 who founded the settlement and named it Londinium all those years ago. Even going back thousands of years it had a major port and served as a dominant commercial centre in Roman Britain.

2,000 years on, to celebrate this rich history, London is inviting people to travel back in time with them to Roman London and experience Londinium - a season of events and activities focusing on Roman heritage including, but not limited to; gladiator games, 3D animated projections, talks by leading historians, outdoor films and archaeological tours in historic London sites. Events have already been taking place through summer but the excitement is not over yet - events will continue on throughout October. Many events are free and great for families or those on a budget. In fact, one particular guided walking event starts at the Tower Hill underground station - right around the corner from our apartments! Explore what life was like for a Roman soldier patrolling the defenses for just £8.00 - but be quick, tickets are selling fast!

One particular featured event is called Trauma running until the 29th of October at London's Roman Amphitheatre, Monday to Saturday 10am - 5pm; Sunday 12 noon - 4pm. Get up close and personal to a Roman skull and potential gladiator discovered during excavations in the Walbrook Stream. The exhibition looks at gladiators in more detail and delves into what life may have been like for those in the Amphitheatre. This is a free event curated by the Museum of London.

Perhaps you're looking for something a little more tongue-in-cheek. Bullsh!tium Londinium is a one of a kind interactive comedy experience by The City of London Corporation. A walking tour full of untruths and wit. This event is free but advanced booking is required and runs from the 30th September to 1st October - 12pm and 4pm, the tour lasts 75 minutes and is step free. Time Out has voted this tour three times as one of the top 101 things to do in London – so it’s definitely a popular choice!

There is certainly something for everyone this month and throughout October in Londinium and plenty to learn (perhaps not including the aforementioned event however!). We hope you manage to partake in some of these events and enjoy the exhibitions, and remember - if you need high quality yet affordable accommodation, book with us now. Our luxury serviced apartments won’t let you down and you can experience London with the comfort of a home away from home.
